Cystitis is a bacterial infection in the bladder. Another name for cystitis is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). It usually causes symptoms such as:
- Stinging or burning when passing urine (going for a wee)
- Wanting to pass urine frequently
- Needing to urinate urgently
- Having to get up in the night to wee
- Offensive smelling urine
- Cloudy urine
Sometimes it can cause blood in the urine, but we would always recommend that you speak to your GP if this is the case, as there other, serious causes (such as cancer) that would usually need to be ruled out. If UTI's are untreated they can sometimes progress to kidney infections, which can be very serious.

No. Cystitis is not sexually transmitted but sex can trigger or worsen cystitis, so it is recommended to abstain from sex until the symptoms have cleared, and to always have a wee after having sex.

The most common side effects include the possibility of:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loose stools
- Dizziness
- Headaches
Please see the patient information leaflet attached for the full list of possible side effects.

Cystits is less common in men. There are also other conditions that may cause similar symptoms, including problems with the prostate gland, and sexually transmitted infections. As these are managed differently, it is important to be certain of the diagnosis before prescribing treatment. This is usually done by using a variety of tests, depending on the exact symptoms.

This may be due to an underlying issue, such as one of the following:
- Vaginal prolapse
- Kidney stones
- Not fully killing all of the bacteria from a previous infection
- Changes around the menopause
- Rarely, bladder cancers
Or, it could be that your symptoms seem like cystitis but are actually due to a completely different cause, such as a sexually transmitted infection.
If this is your second episode of cystitis in the last 6 months, or your third in the last 12 months, it is vital that you have further tests done (including having a urine sample sent to the lab for analysis), before having further treatment. Please speak to your GP, or, for severe symptoms out of hours, please contact the NHS on 111. It would be worth booking an appointment with a GP to try to identify the reasons and manage or investigate it appropriately. Some people require regular treatment to prevent regular UTI's.

1. Ensure you drink plenty of fluids. Sometimes, if it hurts to wee, it might be tempting to drink less so you don't wee as often. This can damage your kidneys and actually worsen the infection. Aim to drink enough so that your urine looks fairly clear or see-through.
2. Simple pain relief like paracetamol (or ibuprofen, provided there are no reasons why you can't take this) can ease some of the pain.
3. If you only have one symptom of cystitis, some over the counter treatments can be helpful. Your local pharmacist can help you choose if there are options available that don't require a prescription.

1. If you are prescribed a course of antibiotics, make sure you complete the whole course, even if your symptoms have already gone.
2. If you are sexually active, make sure you have a wee after sex.
3. Wipe 'front-to-back' (towards your vagina) after using the toilet.
4. Try to stay well hydrated generally.
5. Avoid vaginal douching.
